Asian Snack Attack is our ongoing series where we weed out the good from the bad in the wild and wooly world of newfangled Asian snacks.
Asian Snack: Towfu Cake
Manufacturer: Te Chang Food Processing Co., Ltd.
Country of Origin: Taiwan
Pre-Consumption Expectations: Nervous. I've never seen tofu spelled like this and all of the reassurances of "Hi-Quality" make me a little uneasy, despite the fact that the ingredients seem innocuous. They look like Japanese pickled ginger. They are an unnatural, magenta hue.
Texture: Sticky little bits welded together. Moist.
Taste: Cherry-flavored, with the tenuousness of red beet. A bit cardboard-y and sweet. The smell is more promising than the actual flavor.
Quotes from the Snack Panel: "Like faux jerky."
Stars: 2 out of 5. PASS.
