• Quill is a good and a sometimes bad guy who fights and jokes amid swirling, polychromatic smoke and cascading words like Xandarians, Morag and the Celestial (and awesome) Head. He comes into possession of a pretty blue rock that everyone would risk death trying to get, hence a throwaway about “The Maltese Falcon.” You see, in 1539, some crusading knights persuaded the king of Spain to give them the island of Malta. ... That’s not what happens in “Guardians,” which is based on a comic that first hit in 1969, but no matter. What counts are the dreams of Quill and his compatriots, including a wisecracking raccoon and an ambulatory tree, which have been ushered into existence by the director, James Gunn, with an eye to those who don’t know or care about the source material.
• In other words, you don’t need to be held hostage by the Marvel Weltanschauung to enjoy “Guardians.” The story may be confusing and generic by turns, but if you shake off the bonds of narrative coherency it’s liberating letting the weird words — Yondu, Necrocraft, Sakkaran — just slide right past you, much like the zigzagging, exploding 3-D spaceships. What sticks are the fantastical landscapes, the beautiful creature designs and the actors delivering lively performances, even with strata of makeup and digital wizardry. Among the many amusements is the floating head (kind of like in “The Wizard of Oz”) that yells at a villain, Ronan (Lee Pace, with notes of “Star Wars” and “Prometheus”) who wants the blue rock so he can destroy Xandar, a post-racial Eden run by Nova Prime, a space-age Hillary Rodham Clinton (Glenn Close).
• Watch Guardians of the Galaxy Online Free. James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy is the best Marvel movie yet. I challenge anyone who would place Iron Man or The Avengers over this action-packed and thoroughly entertaining picture that is the definitive summer blockbuster. It’s just f*cking awesome! • Hilarious, innovative, and just super fun. I can’t recall enjoying a movie this much, right along with a crowd, in quite some time. The less you know about the film and these characters, the better. I’m from a world of movie-watching but not so much on the comic book reading front. My knowledge of superheroes comes from watching Saturday morning cartoons. Like many movie lovers, probably one of the few that will actually admit it, I never heard of the “Guardians of the Galaxy.” I had no idea who they were and what they did. This may have made the experience even more enjoyable. There a bunch of funny characters. I’ll just say that.

Chris Pratt is walking across the screen, after just delivering about a dozen hardcore laughs that literally had me in tears; he’s just about gained a theater full of new loyal fans, and Gunn decides to give him a money shot for all the ladies. He walks across the screen in his underwear, sweaty and doused in yellow paint, and heavily panting. I couldn’t believe this is the same guy from NBC’s “Park and Recreation,” Bride Wars, and Her. He’s come into his own, and has fully become a movie star, with talent to boot. His work as “Peter Quell” trumps anything done by Robert Downey, Jr. in the Iron Man films. I’d go as far to say that he should heavily be considered a candidate for a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor (Comedy or Musical). Pratt is the new boy toy for every action figure having kid, and every horny Mom that pretends they hate “these kinds of movies.”
• Coming into another big franchise following Star Trek and Avatar, Zoe Saldana moves quietly throughout the film as an unstoppable force as “Gamora.” Kick-ass fight sequences, and an interesting enough story that should feel satisfying for even the most hardened movie snobs. Dave Bautista wrecks through the film as “Drax” and even develops his own character ticks and beats that help him stand out considerably.

All I could think of during the film was this is one of the many reasons the Academy needs a Digital and Voice Acting category. Something as lively and priceless as Cooper’s voice work deserves some type of recognition. The same can go for Vin Diesel as Groot, though he lacks the speaking volumes to warrant consideration. I thoroughly enjoyed their relationship and dynamic and it’s something that plays out completely well on-screen.
• guardians-galaxyObviously, the film has faults. It’s very heavy-handed on the whole “we are one, we are friends” message. It actually starts to beat us over the head with it at times. The film also defies all the logic of physics. There are times that even for a superhero film, you have to raise your eyebrow. There’s also not really any importance placed on the villain, and I’m not entirely sure I could recite his ultimate plan. This is no fault of Lee Pace as “Ronan” – just an uninteresting story arc.

Geeks will bow, audiences will cheer, and the film will secure itself as a new and enlightened franchise for years to come. Gunn’s admiration for films like Independence Day, Star Wars, and Top Gun are on full display. There are even instances where I thought of Boogie Nights and Running with Scissors. It’s a blend of every clever nuance and thing you love about the movies rolled into one spectacular experience. It’s delicious in nearly every way.

• Continue reading the main story Filled with a multihued populace, Xandar is shiny, clean and bright, and looks familiar because it evokes both our world (one building suggests the Gherkin in London) and your favorite tattered science-fiction paperback. It’s nice if a little ho-hum (as utopias tend to be in movies), particularly when compared with the darkly colored, visually seductive realms and spaces conjured up by Mr. Gunn and his team. From location to location, and character to character, the quality of the special effects meets the demands of the imaginative designs in sweep and detail. There are different ways to get lost in a movie, and while “Guardians” takes you down one after another crazy narrative turn, it also pulls you into — and, for the most part, keeps you in — a fully realized other world.
• That’s a relief, because the movie doesn’t start promisingly, opening with not one but two female clichés: the dead mother and the disposable chick. Both belong to Quill — he tells the chick, who enters with bed hair and not much else, that he forgot she was even there — and they suggest that however futuristic the movie may be, its sexual politics and worldview are antediluvian. He’s a funny guy who brings a light touch to cartoon violence, whether he’s going for giggles (as in “Slither”) or uglier yuks (“Super”). But in “Guardians of the Galaxy,” he also summons up some emotion and even quiet desperation amid the scares and the brutes like Drax (a terrific Dave Bautista). Given these moments of feeling, it
• doesn’t seem accidental that two of the brightest characters in the movie, which Mr. Gunn wrote with Nicole Perlman, are the raccoon and the tree, both surprisingly melancholic figures whose presence proves more resonant than their patter. The raccoon, Rocket (given an effectively grating screech by Bradley Cooper), is a nasty, often crude piece of work who’s never as funny as he thinks. But, much like the tree, a gorgeously rendered creature called Groot (Vin Diesel, in his finest role since “The Iron Giant”) — who nibbles his own tender sprouts and, in a nod to the 1931 film “Frankenstein,” offers a child a bloom — the raccoon carries with him an air of regret, a sense of loss and despair that, in the end, speaks more to our world than to that of the movie. “Guardians of the Galaxy” is rated PG-13 (Parents strongly cautioned). Because the Disney-Marvel sci-fi superhero comedy Guardians of the Galaxy is indeed as great as you’ve heard, and all the evidence points to an opening weekend in the $65-70 million range, a combo that spells “winner” and should help at least silence the speculation about an outright box office flop, leaving only second weekend gross as final confirmation of which way the wind is blowing for director James Gunn on his first big-budget production. Will the wind be at his back to give him a boost against rivals like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and The Expendables 3? Or will it face a headwind against those other films and perform at the lower end of expectations? Let’s take a look at the numbers to get a better idea, and then I’ll get to my full review of the film.

• omparison, we need to look at a few difference examples. Marvel’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier is the most recent adaptation from the studio, and the most recent branding reference in the minds of audiences. Cap’s sequel opened to $95 million in April of this year, a month that typically has lower attendance. In fact, April’s box office gross is usually lower than August, which would seem to argue in Guardians‘ favor. However, Cap had the advantage of being the first big superhero film of the year, rave reviews, and no significant competition for a while. Guardians is getting similarly strong critical reception, but it follows a string of other superhero films this summer and faces stiff competition after opening weekend.
• Doing the math, if Guardians takes about $70 million domestically for the first weekend, then a hypothetical scenario based on Cap’s $95 million suggests a comparative final tally of maybe $540 million for Guardians. That’s without making any adjustments for monthly comparisons or screen count (Captain America: The Winter Soldier opened in slightly fewer screens). Nor are we trying to guess which factors will be most relevant — the Marvel branding alongside audience goodwill after Cap’s amazing run, or supposed fatigue after so many superhero movies and so much negative narrative in the press regarding the summer failing to live up to potential.
