Yep. It's that one time of the year that we all decide we like turkey.
(Dramatic music). Or do we?
Growing up in a Korean household, turkey always made an appearance for Thanksgiving, but it was often incongrously paired with some mandu, perhaps some seaweed soup, of course an assortment of banchan, and maybe a Ukrainian salad mixed in for good measure (or some other recipe that my mom picked up from a friend).
Lately we've structured it so that we'll have the traditional Thanksgiving food, like turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing and so on, then follow it up with a mini round of Korean food. It's really the best of both worlds and for people like my father, who without soup, rice and side dishes, feel that something is amiss, it's the only option.
We realized that everyone has a unique tradition, even for a holiday with such set expectations of what should be served.
