Asian Snack Attack: Tako Octopus Flavored Chips "Jagalchi"

Asian Snack Attack is our ongoing series where we weed out the good from the bad in the wild and wooly world of newfangled Asian snacks.

Asian Snack: "Tako Chips Octopus Flavored Chips" ("Jagalchi" in Korean superscript)

Manufacturer: Nong Shim

Country of Origin: Product of Korea

Pre-Consumption Expectations: Promising due to reliable Nong Shim brand (love their ramen) and hopeful similarity to shrimp chips.

Texture: Crispy, light.

Appearance: Resembles blown up, textured goldfish crackers, oddly enough. Guess separate tentacles challenge even modern day snacking science. 

Taste: Unexpectedly sweet, and not at all fishy. Disappointingly so, in fact. We do a little ingredient sleuthing and discover only "octopus flavoring." "Yellow corvina" is listed third, apparently a fish of some sort that's used in ceviche. Go figure. Incidentally "Jagalchi" is the name of a famous fish market in Pusan, Korean.
