Yulmu, or Job's Tears, is a wonderfully creamy, slightly sweet tea that supposedly helps stomach ulcers and has a general soothing effect on the stomach. There are several preparations -- you can make a powder using a food processor, making a creamy-style tea (adding water/milk and honey), or you can boil it as is and drink as a clear tea. The recipe below is for the creamy-style tea.

Recipe Ingredients:

  • 2-3 tbsp of Job's Tears (yulmu 율무) -- available from a Korean grocery store. They look like pearled barley...
  • 2 cups of water
  • pine nuts for garnish

Recipe Steps:

  • Wash and drain/dry a handful of kernels.
  • Brown on medium heat, stirring frequently for about 20 min; when it starts giving a pop sound, it's done.
  • Grind the grain in the food processor.
  • Put 2 cups of water into a saucepan and add 2 tbsps of the powdered Job's Tears. Bring to a boil and simmer for about 30 minutes.
  • You can add milk/honey to taste and pine nuts to garnish.
