Tips for cooking brown rice

Are you supposed to cook brown rice differently than you cook white rice? I started eating brown rice but it always turns out not so good. I'm using brown jasmine rice.

Try adding a little bit of butter and salt. it really boosts the flavor.

I've moved entirely to eating brown rice instaed of white rice these days. What I've found is to use a little more water than white rice and also cooking it on the stovetop vs in the rice cooker tends to result in fluffier rice. If I cook it in the rice cooker, I usually soak it first, then cook.

Many people swtich to cooking brown rice rather than white rice because of the nutritional benefits of brown rice.  Howver, it is tricky to cook brown rice because of its many layers of bran.  The extra thickness means that brown rice takes longer to cook.  Here are some tips:

  1. Soak 1 cup of brown rice for 1 hour and drain
  2. When you are ready to cook the rice, rinse the rice thoroughly in a sieve or strainer until the water runs clear
  3. Cooking 1 cup of brown rice will give you about 4 cups of cooked rice
  4. To add a little flavor, some people add a pinch of salt.
